I stare
out the window
at where the magnolia tree once stood;
cut down —
in spite
bitten nails snag pilled blue sheets
a stump remains
threadbare
sea creatures beneath fingertips
I trace,
learn beauty
pays a price
when it grows excessively lofty,
and attempts to bloom
uninhibited.
